What To Do Before Your Dog Is Fixed

There are many reasons that you may be considering getting your dog fixed. There are many health benefits of getting your dog fixed. If you have a male dog, you will no longer have to worry about a dog getting testicular cancer. With a female dog, if she is fixed before her first heat, she will be much less likely to come down with specific cancers as well. You may also be getting your dog fixed because you do not want to have any puppies. No matter the reason that you are getting your dog fixed, there are a few things that you should remember to do before your dog is fixed. These are tips for you when getting your dog fixed.

Be Sure The Dog Has Been Vaccinated

It is good to have a specific veterinarian that you go to so they can become well acquainted with the dog and can have a running knowledge of your pup. Your veterinarian will inform you of the vaccinations that they would like to have completed before the surgery, but a common vaccination that is usually done before the surgery is the parvo vaccination. Vaccinations take a little bit of time, and so make sure that the dog has at least two weeks after getting vaccinated before getting fixed.

Keep Your Dog Inside

The night before you are getting your dog fixed, it may be a good idea to keep your dog inside. This goes for outside dogs as well. The only reason is that you are going to need to be able to tell your veterinarian with absolute certainty the status of your dog come operation day. Do not worry; the veterinarian is not going to be asking hard questions, but you need to know how your dog is feeling.

Don't Give Your Dog Food

If your dog is not a puppy any longer, it is going to be very important that you do not let your dog eat before the surgery. A dog with a full stomach is more likely to vomit and become injured during the surgery. Just to be safe, make sure that the dog does not eat before the surgery. This bit of advice does not apply to puppies 4 months old or younger, as a puppy may need to eat a few hours before the surgery to ensure that their blood sugar levels are able to stay at a normal position.

Now that you know how to prepare for getting your dog fixed, contact a clinic like Parkview Animal Hospital to make an appointment.

About Me

Keeping Your Cats Healthy and Happy

My name is Deidre Holland and I am very much a cat person. I have several cats at home and before I bring a new cat into the household, I always take the animal to a veterinarian for a wellness exam. I want to make sure that the new cat is healthy before bringing him or her into the household with the other cats. The veterinarian gives the cat a complete physical exam and the required vaccinations. If you like cats as much as I do, I think that you'll find this blog very informative. In addition to the importance of a wellness exam, you'll learn the steps for introducing a new cat into the household. You'll also find out about nutrition, illness and behavioral problems in cats. Owning cats for many years has given me the experience to help other cat owners and I hope that it helps you.
